We are a community of Christians who strive to practice our Christian beliefs in all of the activities that each of us participates in during our daily lives. We believe that by sharing God’s love and mercy, we can help others to enrich their lives by giving them basic values for their relationships with God, family, and their fellow man. Please join us on Sundays.
Below is a statement from our council.
The Old North Church Council met on Wednesday, November 18, and had quite a lengthy discussion regarding in-person worship services. In light of Bishop Trimble’s plea to suspend such services for now and the similar appeal from District Superintendent, Mitch Geiselman, the Council voted unanimously to temporarily halt our in-person worship service beginning on NOVEMBER 22 and continuing through December 27.
This was not an easy decision to make, as the leadership of your church is and has been determined to find a way to continue, not only our usual meaningful and inspirational services each week, but to continue our Christian fellowship with our precious church family. Of course, we will continue to offer our quality live-streamed Sunday worship service at 9:30 a.m., which is also available following the live-streaming on YouTube.
The Council is aware that this means that our decades-old beautiful tradition of a Christmas Eve candlelight service will, sadly, not occur this year. However, our hardworking Worship Chair, Kim Salmon, along with her worship team, is developing some exciting alternatives for the Advent season to connect us and add to the spirit of Christmas. Watch the Messenger and your email to learn about these events.
In addition, our Missions Chair, Bruce Wright, will make a variety of opportunities for giving available to the congregation. We all know that part of the Christmas spirit includes giving to those in need, and Bruce will be sharing those opportunities with the congregation, again, through the Messenger and through email.
Finally, the Council would encourage all of you to take advantage of the ongoing outstanding programs in place at Old North that offer you the chance on a regular basis to connect with, learn from, and fellowship with your Old North family. Two weekly Zoom events, the Thursday Night Bible Study and the
Intentional Faith Development class on Sunday mornings at 11:00, continue to feed souls, hearts, and minds with relevant and timely studies. In addition, United Methodist Men, Thursday Morning Women’s Group, and United Methodist Youth Fellowship are still up and running, either by Zoom or in small groups within the church. Our ongoing mission of providing monthly meals at the United Caring Shelter and the Old North Fair Trade Market continues to provide assistance to the Evansville community and beyond. Please consider joining one or several of these groups – they offer great ways to keep in touch with church members and continue to recognize God’s presence in your life.
All the committees of the church are still working hard to keep Old North alive, well, and connected during this remarkable time in history. Please remember that each of you are an important part of this giving and loving congregation. The Council is well aware that, when the pandemic is controlled, we will all have work to do to rebuild and reconnect within the church walls. Until then, continue to pray for a vaccine and for our precious Old North.
